Plan International UK is a global children’s charity headquartered in the UK. It works with children growing up in some of the world’s poorest communities to ensure access to education, health care, clean water and future opportunities.

Kate Turner, Plan International UK’s head of HR, has been managing the organisation’s growth. She needed to find an efficient way to improve HR processes and compliance.

The challenge

Keeping up with compliance with a quickly growing workforce

Kate Turner is the head of HR at Plan International UK, which has grown significantly over the past few years and continues to do so. It’s therefore essential for Kate’s team to constantly review their policies and ways of working to ensure that they are up to date and meet the organisation’s needs.

Kate also wants to improve Plan International UK’s awareness of how other organisations operate and to benchmark some of the organisation’s key data to improve processes.

The results

Streamlined HR processes and practices

The HR & Compliance Centre provided Kate and her team with valuable resources and guidance for important HR processes, saving time usually spent on research. By streamlining these processes, Kate was able to focus on more strategic HR projects.

The regular email updates that Kate receives are “very helpful in ensuring [her] knowledge is up to date,” and she finds the employment law guide invaluable for researching specific legal compliance issues

“Having the HR & Compliance Centre means that we can easily find information that we have confidence in, so we don’t have to waste time looking in different places. I find the HR & Compliance Centre comprehensive and easy to understand,” says Kate.

Kate has also found the legal advice line to be “excellent.” Being able to submit a question by phone or by email means that Kate and her team rarely need to consult an employment lawyer, which has helped cut costs.

“Having the HR & Compliance Centre means that we can easily find reliable information that we have confidence in,” concludes Kate.

The HR team at Plan International UK also utilises a wide range of model documents on the HR & Compliance Centre to ensure that its policies and procedures remain up to date. Kate finds that it has been very useful to be able to refer to the model policies.

The HR & Compliance Centre provided valuable benchmarking resources. It includes a database of employer data on more than 3,000 questions, covering important topics like absence rates, annual leave entitlement, training budgets and labour turnover.

Impressed with the breadth of the database, Kate plans to put this to good use going forward to achieve the organisation’s goal of measuring and monitoring its policies and practices against those of other employers.
