Beyond organisational priorities, we also explored the individual perspectives of HR professionals, uncovering personal experiences of working in the profession and highlighting trends that vary by seniority.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The&nbsp;research was completed&nbsp;by a range of individuals, with&nbsp;senior HR professionals (eg&nbsp;directors and heads of HR)&nbsp;making up 58% of the sample. Beyond job level,&nbsp;the majority of&nbsp;respondents have more than 10 years of working within HR, and close to half (45.5%) have more than 20 years of experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Years of HR experience and current job level<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-infogram wp-block-embed-infogram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"_\/QWeLgtpCIOAlmD3PPEJ0\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"UK-c&amp;amp;i-hrcareers-chart1\"><\/div><script>!function(e,n,i,s){var d=\"InfogramEmbeds\";var o=e.getElementsByTagName(n)[0];if(window[d]&&window[d].initialized)window[d].process&&window[d].process();else if(!e.getElementById(i)){var r=e.createElement(n);r.async=1,r.id=i,r.src=s,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,\"script\",\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"satisfying-parts-of-hr\">Most satisfying\u00a0parts of\u00a0working in HR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While HR roles can be demanding, they also offer significant rewards. In fact, four-fifths (81.8%) of respondents reported being satisfied with their job and shared what they find most fulfilling.\u00a0The common themes include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Making a positive impact on employees\u00a0and building relationships<\/strong>.\u00a0Many HR professionals\u00a0highlighted the satisfaction of helping people grow and creating environments where employees\u00a0can\u00a0thrive.\u00a0One\u00a0HR professional\u00a0shared: &#8220;I love the\u00a0variety, every day is different. I enjoy helping people grow and develop in their careers and enabling them to bring their best selves to work every day. I\u00a0also\u00a0enjoy creating environments where people thrive and,\u00a0in turn,\u00a0this helps contribute to company success and improved revenue.&#8221;\u00a0A recurring theme was the link between\u00a0supporting\u00a0employees\u00a0and organisational success, with one HR professional noting\u00a0they\u00a0enjoy\u00a0&#8220;helping people and the organisation work together to achieve the same goals&#8221;.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The\u00a0diverse\u00a0and dynamic\u00a0nature of\u00a0the\u00a0work<\/strong>.\u00a0HR employees are uniquely positioned to\u00a0influence\u00a0a number of\u00a0different aspects\u00a0of the workplace, from employee experience to\u00a0organisational\u00a0strategy. Many HR professionals shared that this is one of the most satisfying parts of their role, with one\u00a0saying\u00a0that\u00a0&#8220;no two days are the same &#8211; people are unpredictable,\u00a0which means you get to learn something new every day&#8221;.\u00a0Others\u00a0emphasised the opportunity for\u00a0continuous\u00a0development\u00a0within their role,\u00a0highlighting the satisfaction they get from problem solving and adapting to the needs of their organisation,\u00a0needing to constantly\u00a0learn\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0keep up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Driving change in their\u00a0organisation<\/strong>.\u00a0Some HR employees shared that they enjoy the\u00a0influence\u00a0their role has\u00a0on\u00a0shaping strategy and improving\u00a0the\u00a0outcomes for their\u00a0organisation.\u00a0One HR professional\u00a0explained they enjoy &#8220;being able to influence strategic decision making and having a seat at the table,\u00a0measuring the impact of interventions when it comes to staff satisfaction and in turn the positive outcome that it brings\u00a0to our customers&#8221;, showcasing the\u00a0broad\u00a0impact HR\u00a0has.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-alabaster-gray-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-a35945ca wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hrcentre.uk.brightmine.com\/commentary-and-insights\/hr-for-hr-how-to-build-strong-relationships-to-deal-with-the-employment-rights-bill\/167759\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HR for HR: How to build strong relationships to deal with the Employment Rights Bill<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hrcentre.uk.brightmine.com\/leading-practice-guides\/developing-employee-performance-understanding-performance-and-its-importance-to-organisational-success\/166461\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Developing employee performance: Understanding performance and its importance to organisational success<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"\/uk\/resources\/talent-management\/employee-engagement\/top-tips-to-achieve-effective-workplace-communication\/\">HR for HR: Top tips to achieve effective communication<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"challenging-parts-of-hr\">Most challenging parts of working in HR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While job satisfaction is\u00a0high for many HR professionals, the\u00a0profession is not without its\u00a0difficulties.\u00a0Below are just some of the most challenging parts of working in HR:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Volume of work<\/strong>.\u00a0High workload and limited resources\u00a0are\u00a0a\u00a0challenge reported by several respondents.\u00a0One HR professional shared\u00a0that\u00a0their\u00a0biggest\u00a0challenge\u00a0is\u00a0&#8220;that our business demands weigh very heavily (and are growing),\u00a0and then we are expected to support new initiatives on top. This is\u00a0all in the day job with no extra resource &#8211; HR is a tough place to work!&#8221;\u00a0The sentiment of being asked to do more\u00a0was expressed in\u00a0several responses,\u00a0pointing to\u00a0the pressure that HR professionals can be put under.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Handling complex cases and legal risks<\/strong>.\u00a0Navigating employee relations issues often involves ambiguity and risk, as one respondent noted:\u00a0&#8220;In complex employee relations cases, it&#8217;s not always possible to be 100% certain you&#8217;re making the &#8216;right&#8217; call. Often, you&#8217;re working with limited information and under significant pressure, so decisions have to be made based on your best judgment and experience.&#8221; This highlights the resilience needed in HR, often having to make tough decisions while under pressure and in situations of uncertainty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Perception\u00a0of HR<\/strong>.\u00a0From\u00a0leading restructuring initiatives to\u00a0managing\u00a0disciplinary processes, HR are often tasked with\u00a0delivering a range of\u00a0tough business decisions.\u00a0As a\u00a0result, the\u00a0perception\u00a0of HR staff by employees can be negative, with one HR professional noting\u00a0that the &#8220;tendency to &#8216;blame&#8217; HR can be discouraging&#8221;.\u00a0Another shared\u00a0they find it challenging &#8220;being seen as the enemy\u00a0or\u00a0collectively being addressed as HR&#8230;I\u00a0do have a name!&#8221;\u00a0While this sentiment was common, respondents also highlighted frustration that HR&#8217;s positive contributions,\u00a0such as reward programmes and wellbeing initiatives,\u00a0often go unnoticed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-alabaster-gray-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-a35945ca wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key resource<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hrcentre.uk.brightmine.com\/training\/creating-a-working-environment-for-good-mental-health-line-manager-training\/166234\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creating a working environment for good mental health &#8211; line manager training<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"disconnect\">Disconnect between HR leaders and practitioners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When exploring barriers to the HR function working effectively across organisations, differences emerge by job level. The resistance to change from employees in general was most commonly reported by HR business partners or HR advisors. It was less commonly reported by those further up the chain of seniority, with just a quarter (25%) of HR directors reporting the same. This may indicate that those in more senior positions perceive organisational adaptability and willingness to change differently from those whose roles sit closer to day-to-day employee interactions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A similar trend was seen&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;line manager&nbsp;buy-in, with&nbsp;senior HR leaders&nbsp;being&nbsp;least likely to report lack&nbsp;of support&nbsp;from line managers as a barrier, as&nbsp;illustrated&nbsp;in&nbsp;Chart 2.&nbsp;This presents the idea that there may be a disconnect between HR leaders, and those working&nbsp;in employee-focused roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barriers to HR\u00a0professionals working effectively across an organisation, by job level\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-infogram wp-block-embed-infogram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"_\/umfEg4qvj66Ficp4kCxj\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"UK-c&amp;amp;i-hrcareers-chart2\"><\/div><script>!function(e,n,i,s){var d=\"InfogramEmbeds\";var o=e.getElementsByTagName(n)[0];if(window[d]&&window[d].initialized)window[d].process&&window[d].process();else if(!e.getElementById(i)){var r=e.createElement(n);r.async=1,r.id=i,r.src=s,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,\"script\",\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Looking\u00a0across\u00a0all barriers, the most common\u00a0challenge\u00a0for HR directors, heads and managers is limited budget\u00a0or staffing within HR, as reported by\u00a0more than half of respondents in these job levels. Directors of HR were most likely to report being &#8220;very satisfied&#8221; or &#8220;satisfied&#8221; with their job, at 93.8%. This reduces to three-quarters (75%) of HR business partners or advisors, indicating that satisfaction is less consistent at operational levels.
