Fortunately for everyone involved, we&#8217;ve come a long way from workplace smoking guidelines and lunchtime martini limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Even today, employee wellness is rapidly changing. What it is currently is not at all what it was just a few short years ago. Sure, we generally have the same goals, but the boundaries that define wellbeing are not the same. They&#8217;re broader\u2026 and better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today, employers are leveraging social determinants of health (SDoH), which go beyond the typical wellness indicators, to improve employee wellness for all employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Employee-Wellness-Redefined\">Employee wellness redefined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Employee wellness is the global effort and investment employers make to maximize each employee&#8217;s physical, economic, social, educational and community-focused well-being. A successful employee wellness initiative involves leadership advocacy, policy, programming, financial investment, upskilling, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today, employee wellness may be viewed through the lens of social determinants of health (SDoH), which include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\">Economic stability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Education access and quality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Health care access and quality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Neighborhood and built environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Social and community context.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.brightmine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/24015031\/sdoh-graphic.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6563\" style=\"width:572px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.brightmine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/24015031\/sdoh-graphic.webp 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.brightmine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/24015031\/sdoh-graphic-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/cdn.brightmine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/24015031\/sdoh-graphic-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/cdn.brightmine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/24015031\/sdoh-graphic-768x768.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to the World Health Organization, SDoH are &#8220;the nonmedical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Viewing employee wellness through the lens of SDoH supports health equity and helps employers achieve better results overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, how do we leverage SDoH to influence employee well-being?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Leveraging-SDoH-as-an-Employer\">Leveraging SDoH as an employer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When done right, employers leverage SDoH to improve employee well-being through workplace interventions and employee benefits. The following are three employee wellness trends to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Enabling-Technology\">1. Enabling technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Steve Boese, HR Tech Conference Chair and President and co-founder, H3 HR Advisors, <a href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/what-are-hrs-top-technology-priorities-for-the-year-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told HR Executive<\/a> that in 2023, he would &#8220;look to adopt only those technologies that put employees first \u2014 in their accessibility, their ease of use, and their direct relevance to making employees&#8217; work and personal lives easier.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Other leaders echoed this opinion, signaling that in 2023, HR leaders should invest in technology that places employees at center stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As far as wellness is concerned, this means leveraging HR technology to enable SDoH interventions and optimize the employee&#8217;s wellness experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Work-Design-for-Meaningful-Work\">2. Work design for meaningful work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/the-organization-blog\/making-work-meaningful-from-the-c-suite-to-the-frontline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McKinsey found<\/a> that when employees find their work meaningful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\">Performance improves by 33%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Employees are 76% more committed to the organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">They are 49% less likely to leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Promoting meaningful work supports key SDoH factors, including social and community context and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2023, employers will focus on meaningful work in new ways. According to Laci Loew, HR &amp; Compliance Center&#8217;s Senior Analyst HR Strategy and Insights, employers will look to &#8220;design well-being into meaningful work&#8221; by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-brightmine-list-item-spacing-small\">\n<li class=\"\">Using systems to promote collaborative work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Assigning high-priority work that aligns with employees&#8217; personal values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Work-Environment-Interventions-for-Behavioral-Well-Being\">3. Work environment interventions for behavioral well-being<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Over half of employees across 15 countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/mhi\/our-insights\/present-company-included-prioritizing-mental-health-and-well-being-for-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> at least one mental health challenge this year. More importantly, employees reported toxic workplace behavior as &#8220;by far the greatest predictor of negative workplace outcomes,&#8221; including burnout and intent to leave. It was 35 times more impactful on their mental health than &#8220;access to resources&#8221; like EAPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Instead of asking employees to focus inward by providing individual resources, in 2023, employers plan to implement cultural and environmental interventions to support behavioral well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Two key interventions employers plan to drive forward on a global scale include growth mindset and psychological safety initiatives.
