Duration: 60 minutes

Accommodation obligations now reach far beyond traditional ADA requests, creating compliance challenges across nearly every stage of the employment lifecycle. HR leaders must address a growing range of accommodation issues involving religion, pregnancy and reproductive health and mental health and neurodiversity. At the same time, inconsistent practices, evolving legal standards, and increased scrutiny of AI and automation can increase the risk of lawsuits and complicate managing the workforce, particularly for multistate employers and organizations with remote workers.

In this 60-minute webinar, attorney Kyra Buch, a shareholder at Littler, will examine the accommodation issues creating some of the most significant compliance challenges for employers today. They will address ADA developments, including considerations surrounding mental health and neurodiversity, religious accommodation challenges and the growing impact of AI-enabled recruiting and workplace technologies. They will discuss pregnancy and postpartum accommodations under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) and the trend toward broader reproductive health accommodation laws. In addition, Kyra will share practical strategies for evaluating requests, documenting decisions, and reducing legal risk while supporting employees and maintaining compliance.

Attendees will learn:

  • How AI-enabled employment tools can create accommodation challenges
  • Key compliance issues involving religious accommodations
  • PWFA requirements and other reproductive health accommodation considerations
  • Practical strategies for handling accommodation requests and reducing risk
  • And more!

    About the speaker

    Kyra A. Buch
    Shareholder, Littler

Kyra A. Buch’s practice includes experience with matters related to leaves of absence (including FMLA and state equivalents), disability accommodation under the ADA and state equivalents, and other forms of paid and unpaid leaves. Kyra has helped both small and national companies develop policies and procedures related to leave law, provided advice and counsel on individual matters, and assisted with crossover issues that often arise between workers’ compensation laws and the ADA.

Kyra has an expanding emphasis in workplace safety, particularly handling OSHA audits and citations. She advises clients on overlapping issues related to both workplace safety and workers’ compensation and works heavily within the firm’s COVID-19 Task Force and Vaccination Working Group. The group provides local, state, and national advice on interpretation of COVID-related laws and regulations as well the practicalities of implementing these laws.

Kyra spends roughly half of her time as a litigator, primarily focusing on single plaintiff litigation defending claims such as retaliation, discrimination, wrongful termination, failure to accommodate, and harassment. The other half of her practice consists of advice and counsel work creating policies and procedures for clients and advising on individualized inquiries for employees.
