The performance review meeting is the keystone of the performance management process. The meeting is an opportunity for employees and managers to review and assess the employee’s progress and provides both the employer and the employee with important information. Employees get feedback on their performance, including their strengths and opportunities for development. Employers get information that can be used in employee learning and development, for assessing qualification for assignments and promotions, and for determining eligibility for merit increases and bonuses.
A performance review should ideally be the culmination of a series of conversations held with an employee over the year as they worked towards meeting their goals and objectives. At the end of a performance review meeting, an employee should leave with a clear understating of how the manager assessed the performance rating and why the employee received the rating they did. They also should have received actionable feedback about how to improve their performance in their current role and develop towards future career opportunities.

- Step 1. Understand the performance appraisal process
- Step 2. Request employee self-evaluation
- Step 3. Review documentation and notes about employee’s performance
